Barcelona increased their lead at the top of the Spanish Liga on Saturday to seven points, with a 3-0 home thrashing of Racing Santander.
Pep Guardiola's record-breaking team now have 55 points from 20 games, seven more than second-placed Real Madrid, who were due to receive Mallorca on Sunday.Barca turned in yet another delicious exhibition of exquisite passing football, and would have scored more goals had it not been for a defiant display from Santander's veteran keeper Tono.
Before the game there was an emotive minute's silence for Barca's 1950s striker Jordi Vila, who died on Wednesday aged 81.
What little hope Santander had of containing Barca went up in smoke after just two minutes, when little pedro made it 1-0 by heading in a perfcet centre from Lionel Messi. It was Pedro's fifth goal in consecutive league games and confirmed his growing importance in the team.
In the 33rd minute David Villa was tripped by Santander defender Henrique, and Messi calmly made it 2-0 from the penalty spot. It was Messi's 19th league goal and leaves him three behind Real's Cristiano Ronaldo.
Andres Iniesta added a third with a left-foot shot in the 57th minute after Pedro had cleverly flicked on a centre from Villa.
Barca then seemed to take pity on the visitors and eased up, with their minds on Wednesday's cup semi-final first leg against Almeria.
Earlier on Saturday, Sevilla had come back to life with a 4-1 home destruction of lowly Levante, with Luis Fabiano hitting a handsome hat-trick.
Brazil's World Cup centre-forward has been in poor form this season but finally emerged from his lethargy against hapless Levante.
Luis Fabiano opened the scoring in the 28th minute by powerfully heading in a centre from Jesus Navas, another Sevilla star finally back for form and fitness. Eleven minutes later Sevilla midfielder Koffi Romaric sent over a tempting corner and Julien Escude headed it in to make it 2-0.
Luis Fabiano completed a perfect first half for the hosts by making it 3-0 from the penalty spot, after Levante defender Javi Venta had pulled down Fernando Navarro.
Xisco pulled a goal back for Levante but Luis Fabiano then completed his hat-trick with an impressive solo goal, cutting in from the wing.
Sevilla coach Gregorio Manzano said that "at last we have enjoyed a comfortable game at home, for once things went as we planned."
The win takes Sevilla up to joint seventh with Athletic Bilbao, with 29 points from 20 games. It also leaves them in good heart for Wednesday's King's Cup semi-final first leg against Real Madrid.
Levante, for their part, stay second from bottom, with just 15 points.
Later on Saturday, fourth-placed Valencia were due to take on new-look Malaga, who have made six January signings.
