Belgium's Justine Henin announced Wednesday her retirement from professional female tennis, due to recurring problems with her elbow.
After being knocked out of the Australian Open last week by Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova, the former number one player admitted last week she was still suffering from the aftermath of an injury she picked up in June, despite taking six months off to recover.
"My elbow is too fragile and hurt so that my passion and my profession at high level cannot continue to exist," she said in a message posted on her website.
"After having well considered and following the advice of doctors, it is now clear and I accept that my career here ... finally ends," she added.
Henin had already quit tennis in May 2008, but made a successful return in 2010, before being forced to take time off again after hurting her right elbow during a game at Wimbledon.
