Liverpool agree record fee for Carroll, Torres talks on

Liverpool confirmed on Monday that they have agreed to a British record fee to sign striker Andy Carroll from Newcastle United.

Fernando Torres, meanwhile, is believed to be close to a 45- million-pound (70-million-dollar) move to Chelsea, rising to 50 million with add-ons.

Newcastle turned down two bids from Liverpool, the second believed to be 35 million pounds, after which Carroll handed in a transfer request.

Liverpool then announced on their website that they had agreed on a fee, presumably following a third bid.

"A British record transfer fee has been agreed between Newcastle United and Liverpool for Magpies striker Andy Carroll," a statement on the Newcastle website confirmed.

"The 22-year-old England international has this afternoon handed in a transfer request, which has reluctantly been accepted by the club, and Carroll is currently in talks with The Reds over a move to Anfield."

The financial details on the Torres deal are thought to be all but complete, with the player awaiting permission to travel to London for a medical.

Meanwhile, Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam is believed to be close to a move to Liverpool after a car was sent from Anfield to collect him.
