Serie A leaders AC Milan were one man down Saturday, but Brazilian Robinho and Zlatan Ibrahimovic were on target for a 2-0 win over minnows Catania.
Robinho pounced on the rebound after a smashing free kick from Zlatan Ibrahimovic to flick home the opener on 58 minutes and fed the Swede as he notched his 13th goal with a late deflection.
When Robinho scored his seventh goal this season, the Devils had just had Dutch newcomer Marc van Bommel red-carded with a second booking.
Catania goalkeeper Mariano Andujar seemed set for a busy game when he had to save a drive that Robinho aimed at the far post in the first minute off an assist from Ibrahimovic.
The Argentine had little else to do in the first half, beside blocking a break from Antonio Cassano, but saw plenty of action in his area late in the game.
On the free kick leading to the goal, Andujar found little help from a shaky wall and was well positioned when Ibra and Dutch substitute Urby Emanuelson fired fast shots before the goal that settled matters with six minutes left.
The Sicily hosts had an early chance when Ciro Capuano saw his drive deflected by Daniele Bonera, but never came truly close to scoring and forced a first save from Christian Abbiati with Japanese substitute Takayuki Morimoto with two minutes left.
Lazio beat Fiorentina 2-0 earlier Saturday in a game where the goals came late in the second half via a brace from Libor Kozak.
The towering 21-year-old Czech converted a spot kick after being floored on 69 minutes and nodded home four minutes later off a precise cross from substitute Giuseppe Sculli.
Lazio are at the moment joint second on 40 points, seven points behind Milan. Napoli, who play a home game to Sampdoria on Sunday, look to move within four points of the Devils.
In Sunday action, Roma hope to leapfrog Lazio when they visit Bologna, while champions Inter Milan welcome Palermo as they continue their chase of the leading city rivals with a 12-point gap and a game in hand.
