Cologne came from two goals down to stun Bayern Munich 3-2 while Bayer Leverkusen slid to a defeat at Nuremberg to leave leaders Borussia Dortmund 12 points clear at the top of the Bundesliga Saturday.
Slovenia striker Milivoje Novakovic struck twice for Cologne who hit three second-half goals to drop Bayern to fifth in the table.
Leverkusen were also unable to benefit from Dortmund's goalless draw at home Friday evening to Schalke, going down 1-0 at Nuremberg.
Dortmund have 51 points, with Leverkusen on 39, while Mainz, who conceded a stoppage-time goal in a 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen, are level on 37 points with Hanover who edged Wolfsburg 1-0, while Bayern remain on 36.
Mario Gomez netted his 16th goal in 19 games and Hamit Altintop struck shortly before half-time as Bayern went two goals up at Cologne.
But the home side pulled one back through Christian Clemens 10 minutes after the break and Novakovic struck twice in the 62nd and 73rd minutes for an unlikely victory.
"The main thing was that we believed in ourselves in the second half. We were too scared in the first half," said Cologne coach Frank Schaefer.
Striker Lukas Podolski said: "We saw a completely different Cologne in the second half. The way we turned the game round with the fans behind us was sensational."
The defeat brought Bayern's run of seven wins from the last eight games to an end and made it five consecutive games without defeat for Cologne against Bayern, who last lost a game after leading 2-0 in November 1997 when they were defeated 4-2 by Leverkusen.
Bayern coach Louis van Gaal said his side had "lost a big opportunity" after rivals Leverkusen were also defeated and Dortmund failed to win.
"When you are on top like we were in the first half it is incredible that we have again, for the fourth or fifth time, given a game away," he said.
"We have the game under control, we score goals - two goals should normally be enough. But we can't keep our concentration for 90 minutes. After going 3-2 down we tried everything but it was too late. We only have ourselves to blame."
Christian Eigler struck on the hour for the only goal - and was dismissed for a second booking with three minutes remaining - as midtable Nuremberg defeated Leverkusen 1-0.
"Nuremberg played a rough game and went over the top, and unfortunately the referee did not protect my players," Leverkusen coach Jupp Heynckes said.
"We are very disappointed with the referee's performance. With our performance as well but more with the referee. He was biased and that was a big factor. But we didn't play well."
Sergio Pinto's fifth-minute goal was enough to give Hanover a 1-0 win over Wolfsburg for whom Diego hammered an 80th-minute penalty against the bar.
Mainz led Bremen thanks to a first-half Andre Schuerle goal but the visitors dug out a point with a goal two minutes into stoppage time by Claudio Pizarro.
Borussia Moenchengladbach continue to prop up the table after VfB Stuttgart came from two goals down at half-time to win 3-2 with a late penalty for their first away win of the season in the battle of the two bottom sides.
Two goals in two minutes in the first half through Dante and Igor de Camargo put the home side in front at the break.
But Stuttgart hit back with goals from Pavel Pogrebnyak in the 51st and Martin Harnik five minutes later before Timo Gebhardt scored from the penalty spot with three minutes remaining after Dante brought down Pogrebnyak and was shown a second yellow card.
Moenchengladbach on 16 points now trail Stuttgart by three points and Cologne, St Pauli and Kaiserslautern by six.
Hoffenheim had new signing Edson Braafheid sent off in the 79th minute but managed to hold on for a 3-2 win over Kaiserslautern to move up to seventh.
Sunday's duel between SV Hamburg and city neighbours St Pauli was postponed late Saturday after an inspection of the pitch following heavy rain. Freiburg entertain Eintracht Frankfurt in the day's remaining game.
