Idowu beats Olsson in Birmingham indoor meeting

(Reuters) - World triple jump champion Phillips Idowu opened his season with victory at the Birmingham Grand Prix on Saturday, beating old rival Christian Olsson.
The Briton, who also won the European title last year, summoned a final round jump of 17.57 metres to leave Sweden's Olsson in second place with a best of 17.20m.
Londoner Idowu, now based in Birmingham, said recently he would treat the home indoor meeting as a "glorified training session" but will take confidence from beating Olsson, one of his main rivals at the August 27-September 4 world championships in Daegu, South Korea.
Mo Farah broke the European and British indoor 5,000m record after a tussle with American Galen Rupp.
Farah, who will be looking to defend his 3,000m title at the European indoor championships in Paris next month, clocked 13 minutes 10.60 seconds.
American Michael Rodgers ran a personal best 6.50 seconds to win the 60m but there was a worry for Britain's European championships 100m silver medallist Mark Lewis-Francis who suffered a groin injury in his heat.
