Napoli crash at Chievo, lose ground from leaders AC Milan

A gritty Chievo beat visiting Napoli 2-0 Wednesday and denied them the chance to close in on Serie A leaders AC Milan.

The Devils only drew 0-0 at home on Tuesday to third-place Lazio, but are now five points clear of the Naples side, who stayed second on 43.

After three wins in the last four games, Napoli played a lacklustre game and were stunned by Davide Moscardelli's spectacular swerving drive before Gennaro Sardo stormed into the box in the second half.

There was plenty of action in Palermo, where Juve's first 20 minutes at the Renzo Barbera were horrible as the hosts scored twice, with Fabrizio Miccoli beating his former goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and Giulio Migliaccio nodding home a corner kick.

Miccoli fired from a tight angle under the legs of the international, who again seemed to dither when Migliaccio headed from close range.

Juve newcomer Alessandro Matri fired onto Salvatore Sirigu from close range before Claudio Marchisio was booked for his protests after a glaring handball by home defender Cesare Bovo.

Marchisio found consolation on 36 minutes as he drilled a great drive into the lower left corner after a flawless control.

As Juve continued pressing after the break, Bovo deflected a sure- fire drive from Matri before the Bianconeri gradually slowed their tempo.

Juve's fourth defeat in six games deepened their crisis as Palermo leapfrogged them into seventh place.

Roma dithered at home, playing out a 1-1 draw with minnows Brescia, and Udinese also lost momentum in a 1-1 home draw to Bologna.

In other action, Cagliari won 1-0 at Sampdoria, Lecce won 1-0 at Parma, Cesena and Catania drew 1-1, and Fiorentina beat Genoa 1-0.

Title holders Inter Milan close the mid-week round on Thursday at bottom side Bari. The European champions have a 10-point gap from Milan, with a game in hand.
