Narrow win puts Bologna into safety zone

Bologna beat 10-man Catania 1-0 Sunday to steer clear of the lower reaches of the Italian Serie A.

Argentine Pablo Alvarez was dismissed on 22 minutes for the visitors after a second booking and fell behind before the break as Daniele Portanova laid in a ball squared from Uruguayan Diego Perez.

Bologna moved into a safe mid-table position despite a three-point deduction they received for missed payments of stipends.

Catania remained two points clear of the drop zone. They have suffered three defeats and drew once since the arrival of Argentine coach Diego Simeone.

In Saturday action, Alessandro Matri scored a brace against his former team to help struggling giants Juventus beat Cagliari 3-1 and end an embarrassing run.

Juve had suffered two straight defeats, with a total of four in the previous six games and are now 10 points behind Serie A leaders AC Milan.

Also on Saturday, Antonio Di Natale scored his 100th league goal for Udinese in a 2-0 defeat of visiting Sampdoria that pushed the Udine side into fifth position, eight points from the top.

Di Natale boasts 16 goals from 24 games this season and a career total of 191.

He trails Uruguayan top scorer Edinson Cavani, who later Sunday is looking to improve the 17 goals scored for Napoli against minnows Cesena.

Leaders Milan play away to Genoa, while champions Inter Milan close the weekend in the evening with a classic tie against Roma.
