Lopez hits game-winner, Nets send Cavs to 17th straight loss

The Cleveland Cavaliers came close to winning their first game in more than a month, but couldn't wrap it up because Ryan Hollins failed to rein in Brook Lopez.

Lopez scored 28 points, including the tie-breaking turnaround jumper with 1.4 seconds remaining, and the New Jersey Nets sent the visiting Cavaliers to their 17th straight loss, 103-101 on Monday night in a battle of the Eastern Conference bottom clubs.

"We fought hard, it's tough to take," Cavs coach Byron Scott said. "Right now, we're losing some of these battles, but hopefully in the long run we'll win the war."

After squandering a seven-point lead early in the fourth quarter, the Cavs knotted it at 101-apiece on Joey Graham's three-pointer from the left corner with 7.1 seconds left, setting the stage for Lopez's heroics and Hollins' blunder.

Cleveland had a non-shooting foul to give when Lopez took an entry pass from Sasha Vujacic near the free throw line, Instead of wrapping up the Nets centre, Hollins pitter-pattered him on the back. The officials didn't call the obvious foul and Lopez hit the eventual game-winning six-foot jumper.

"I kept slapping him in the back and they didn't call it," Hollins said. "I guess they didn't notice I was trying to foul him. I guess you have to wrap him up. It's a tough loss but a lesson learned".

Long-distance marksman Daniel Gibson had a chance to end the Cavs' losing streak when he got the ball out of a timeout and launched the potential game-winning three from the left corner. But it rimmed out as time expired, sending Cleveland to a franchise record-tying 21 straight road loss.

"When that last shot went up I was really praying and holding my breath," Nets coach Avery Johnson said. "I really wanted this one for our guys."
