Holders Bayern Munich were on Sunday drawn to host Schalke in the German cup semi-finals as last year, ruling out a dream final between the two sides.
Instead, the winner will meet a second division team in MSV Duisburg or Energie Cottbus, who play the other semi-final.
The semi-finals are scheduled for March 1 and 2 and the final in Berlin takes place May 21.
Munich have lifted the trophy a record 15 times in 17 finals and hold a 7-1 lead against the four-time cup winners Schalke in the competition.
The two sides also met in the 2010 semi, at Schalke, with Munich winning 1-0 from Arjen Robben's extra-time winner. Their most famous semi-final date was 1984, with the game at Schalke ending 6-6 and Munich winning the rematch in the pre-penalty shootout era 3-2.
Duisburg and Cottbus have not won the competition. Hanover are the only team to win the cup as a second division team, in 1992.
